Recently I went on three absolutely amazing (and spooky–at times) expeditions deep into the haunted forest where my book “The Wee-Jees” is based. The goal of the expeditions was to take photographs of the locations I wrote about in the book. We got so much more than we bargained for and this post is about one special location and photo in particular.
It’s the photo of the castle on the hill.
And there’s something else, unexplained, in the photo that’s got people questioning what it is!
I snapped this photo with my phone!
This is such an important shot for me because when I was a kid in this forest, searching with friends for the treasure a spirit board told us was there, this was our view when we stopped to eat our snacks. Imagine that! Four US military kids living in a foreign country with our jaws dropped staring at a castle on the hill in the distance.
None of us had seen a castle before that day
I mean, a real one–in person!
We didn’t even know it existed there, we happened to be in the perfect spot in the perfect moment for when the angle of the sun was just right, and suddenly we saw its shape against the sky. We were blown away.
I’ll never forget that, ever. I don’t think you would either. I’m sure you can remember a moment when you saw something unexpected and awesome for the very first time.
It’s a wonder I happened upon that spot at the perfect moment again. It was certainly fortuitous.
I wrote about it in the book, and 30 years later, during one of our expeditions last year we rounded the side of the mountain to walk right into this view as if it leaped from the pages of my memories!
It was absolutely incredible and took me back to my childhood in an instant. I loved it! The photographer I was with couldn’t help but laugh at my sudden glee. I’m so happy I got this shot. I know the castle isn’t clear because it’s quite a bit further away than it appears and the sun is bright behind it, but still, I love it.
I hope you read “The Wee-Jees,” if you haven’t already, to find out more and experience it with me.
I’ve had readers tell me they see an ORB in the photo
It could be an orb, but I personally think it’s a lens flare in this case due to its size and color. Decide for yourself. I circled it in the cropped photo below in yellow. I also circled the castle for those having trouble seeing it.
Usually, with lens flares there should be several along a strong ray of sunlight. This is not the case in this photo. It’s not a bug because it’s perfectly round and radiating light, and I don’t think it’s dust either since it appears pretty solid with smooth edges. It also wasn’t in any of my other photos from my phone. I’m not sure what it is exactly.
Either way, it’s unexplained, making it an anomaly, which isn’t surprising when it comes to this particular forest.
I hate to admit this, considering we got so much other stuff in our photos, I didn’t catch this–whatever it is–until readers who viewed it on Facebook pointed it out to me. It’s a lesson learned, examine ALL of your photos for anything and everything. I was more focused on the amazing photos the photographer took and with my shot I was simply enraptured with the castle on the hill (still am).
The new book about our expeditions into the haunted forest will be coming out soon.
It contains the incredible photos we took that captured more unexplained phenomena, including mind-blowing photos of a shadow figure and a misty apparition. I can’t wait to share those with you. Stay tuned, subscribe or follow my page on Facebook.
