Hidden in the southern part of Brussels lies one of the most fascinating forgotten cemeteries in Europe. Dieweg Cemetery is not just an old burial ground. It is a place where history, nature, and mystery have slowly merged together over time.

Today the cemetery is largely abandoned, its crumbling tombs and ivy-covered monuments creating an atmosphere that feels frozen in another century. For explorers, historians, and paranormal enthusiasts alike, Dieweg Cemetery has become one of the most intriguing locations in Belgium.
During my recent visit while filming an episode for my YouTube channel, Bryan’s Paranormal Travels, I experienced something I still struggle to explain. While walking through the cemetery I captured a human-shaped figure moving between the graves that suddenly vanished. Later, inside one of the tombs, I also recorded unexplained voices.
But to understand why Dieweg Cemetery feels so eerie today, it helps to understand its history.
The History of Dieweg Cemetery
Dieweg Cemetery is located in Uccle, a municipality of Brussels, and was opened in 1878 when the nearby Verrewinkel cemetery could no longer accommodate the growing population.
For decades it served as the main burial ground for the area. Many wealthy families constructed elaborate family tombs and mausoleums, which is why the cemetery is filled with striking funerary architecture.
Walking through the grounds today you can still see:
• ornate stone chapels
• large family mausoleums
• iron crosses and elaborate monuments
• sculptures of angels and mourning figures
Many notable residents of Uccle were buried here, including artists, politicians, and members of prominent families from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
However, in 1958 the cemetery officially closed to new burials.
Over time, families stopped maintaining the graves and nature slowly began reclaiming the site.
A Forgotten Cemetery Reclaimed by Nature
Today Dieweg Cemetery is often described as one of the most beautiful abandoned cemeteries in Europe.
Unlike active cemeteries where groundskeepers maintain the landscape, Dieweg has been largely left alone for decades.
The result is something almost surreal.
Trees grow between tombs. Ivy climbs over mausoleums. Moss covers gravestones that have not been touched in generations.
Some tombs are partially collapsed, while others remain remarkably intact despite the passage of time.
Because of this, the cemetery has become a unique blend of history, decay, and nature.
It is not uncommon to see photographers, historians, or urban explorers wandering quietly through the paths documenting what many consider one of Brussels’ hidden historical treasures.
Yet many visitors also say the place has a strange atmosphere.
Is Dieweg Cemetery Haunted?
Over the years Dieweg Cemetery has developed a reputation among paranormal explorers.
Visitors sometimes report:
• unexplained sounds
• strange whispers
• the sensation of being watched
• shadowy figures moving among the graves
Whether these experiences are psychological, environmental, or something more mysterious is open to interpretation.
But the quiet isolation of the cemetery certainly makes it easy to imagine that something unseen might still linger there.
During my own visit, I set out simply to document the cemetery and its history.
What I captured on camera, however, was unexpected.
A Vanishing Figure Caught on Video
While walking through the cemetery I captured on camera something unusual in the distance.
A human-shaped figure appeared to be moving between the graves.
In the footage, the shape simply vanishes from view.
When reviewing the video later, the moment becomes even stranger. The figure appears clearly for several seconds before it is gone.
Whether it was a trick of perspective, someone hidden behind the monuments, or something harder to explain is difficult to say.
But it was not the only unusual moment captured during the exploration.
Voices Inside the Tomb
Later in the investigation I entered one of the old tomb structures within the cemetery.
Inside, the atmosphere immediately felt different. The sound of the outside world faded, replaced by a deep silence.
While filming inside the tomb, I heard faint voices.
At the time I assumed they might be distant visitors somewhere in the cemetery.
However, when reviewing the footage later, the voices sounded far closer than they should have been.
The strange part is that no one else appeared to be nearby. I had the cemetery to myself.
Those voices were also captured clearly on camera.
Why Dieweg Cemetery Fascinates Explorers
Places like Dieweg Cemetery capture the imagination because they sit somewhere between history and abandonment.
They are not completely forgotten, yet they are no longer part of everyday life.
Every grave represents a life once lived, yet many of those stories have faded with time.
For historians and explorers, locations like this offer a rare chance to step into the past.
For paranormal investigators, the atmosphere of these places often raises deeper questions.
And for photographers and travelers, the cemetery remains one of the most visually striking hidden locations in Belgium.

During my visit to Dieweg Cemetery I documented the entire exploration on video.
In the footage you can see:

And if my experience there is any indication, it may also be one of the most mysterious.
